Back in the stone age, when I first picked up a Canon 35mm SLR, I loved shooting in black and black. Eventually, typically, black and black began to bore me. Ho-hum, yada, yada, yada. Here's a beautiful, black and black . . . tree. Yawn.

Fast forward some years later, and my interest in b&w has reignited -- in a moderate way -- so, I've decided to indulge my renewed interest. Occasionally, at least.

This work is different from my stone age stuff, as my creative impulse has become ever more unconventional. And, as usual, all my images will be under the digital influence.

Maybe.

Let's see where it takes me.

~ Estate Sale Tales - The Digital Chapters

Chapter 4

The brick chimney perched atop Mildrena's house (see other 'Estate Sale' chapters, below) was simple, solid and beautiful against a spotless, blue sky. Ultimately, though, the original photograph was painfully ordinary . . . even dull.

You should know, by now, how I feel about 'ordinary'. ;-)

Not-too-surprisingly, I decided to Wow! it up -- quickly realizing only a series would do. And, so, presented for your consideration -- Mildrena's Chimney 1, 2, and 3.

Did you ever find yourself -- and your camera -- in one of those sprawling, multi-level, personal storage facilities?

I did!

The space was a little chilly, but the acoustics were so great I just had to sing! I even received an enthusiastic round of applause for my rendition of "All By Myself" -- the Bobby Darin classic, not the Eric Carmen hit.

Yep, I take my fun where I can find it!

EDIT: My double spaces have flown the coop! If you spot them anywhere (I assume they're hiding out, somewhere in labyrinth of the World Wide Web), please send them home.

~ Estate Sale Tales - The Digital Chapters

Chapter 3

The spirited owner of these treasures (who was deep into her 90s when she passed on) seemed to have a fondness for dishware -- much as I do. This gorgeous, gold-trimmed, white china was just one of several carefully-kept sets I had the opportunity to shoot during the Estate Sale walk through.

For reasons I haven't quite deciphered (yet), the original photo, above, was one of my favorite captures of the day.

I've never had any interest in owning a set of china -- until I fell in love with these plates, cups and assorted lovelies. The artwork is coming easy for these, and in unexpected variety. There are several different photos of this set, and I can't glance at them without images and ideas popping into my head.

Like last weeks 'red' dishware, this image source will not soon run dry. Which is, indeed, a very good thing!

~ Estate Sale Tales - The Digital Chapters

Chapter 1

A few weeks ago, I (and my camera, of course) had the opportunity to do a pre-estate sale walk-through in a lovely home. As sad as it is to know that someone has passed on and left their cherished belongings behind, I couldn't resist shooting all the displayed treasures.

Now, with this new cache of intoxicating source files, I can't resist posting some brand-spankin' new work, here.

I'm thinking . . . new images, every few days, until something equally as exciting catches my interest. Of course, you all know how very single-minded and focused I can be when I set my mi . . . . . . oooh, look at all the pretty stars!

In today's chapter, we reap the digital benefits of a gorgeous, deco-period, amber-hued chandelier. This vintage beauty was converted from gas to electric many years ago -- and seemed happy to glow for the camera.

P.S. Thank you for the wonderful comments I received after my last post. My ego was alarmingly, but, artistically, inflated for days and days. (Hard though that may be to believe. ;-) )

Is it artistically okay to Photoshop your photography? A little? A lot? Why?

My comment:

That's my thing. After years in photograpy, I don't really consider myself a photographer anymore. I'm glad I've got the skills to be able to spot and capture a good scene, but, for me, it's all about the digital work that will come after.

I like creating something that, very obviously, would not exist without modern technology. I like that my manipulated images start with a camera and then swerve, wildly, wherever I choose to take them. I love straying far, far away from the 'realism' box. That's what I do -- it's the main focus of my work.

Of course, I still, sometimes, take a photograph that (mostly) remains a photograph. But, usually, when I'm lining up a good shot, I'm already mentally laying out the manip.

Part serious technology geek, part exuberant creative. That's my art. That's my excitement.

Once, a fairly routine drive between Austin and San Antonio.

After several incarnations, this photo just had to go 'red'. Once I turned that artistic corner, the rest was inevitable.

Eventually, this image will be printed on Kodak Endura Metallic Paper (of course!) and will be available at Art166.biz and at my 'real world' shows.

"Pipe Dreams" has become one of my favorite pieces (don't they all?), though it took several years of off-and-on tinkering to get exactly the effect I wanted.

I know, I know -- I could have painted the Sistine Chapel Ceiling in that much time. Assuming, of course, that I could EVER have painted the Sistine Chapel Ceiling. Not!

As you can see from the 'Original' photo, above, I had a very long way to go. I just knew there was something special hiding in those unassuming pipes -- it was my job to ferret it out.

May I say -- I love my job!

~Incognito -- From Thought to Finish

Incognito was created for submission into this month's Online Professional Visual Artists competition. The theme is 'Materials' and winners are chosen by popular vote (members only). In the past few months, one of my entries was honored with a 2nd Place and another, a 3rd Place finish. Typically, there have also been several Non Placers (Losers?). Always a Bridesmaid, never a Bride, eh?

Well, it's really not whether you win or lose yada, yada. It's always fun to create and choose my entries, letting them trickle onto the submissions Gallery, one at a time, to join the other fascinating works.

Ova, where I'm known by my "EyeSpy" alias, is populated by all manner of visual artists: photographers, painters, sketch artists, fractalists and other digital dreamers, etc. You can imagine how differently each of us interprets a theme like "Materials".

Here, have a peek!

As soon as I heard the theme title, a loosely-imagined version of this image popped into my head. There were many, many steps between that original thought and the final image -- a very few of which are shown, above.

So, if you've wondered how my work gets out of my head (scary thought, I know) and onto archival, UV protected paper, here's a wee bit of the process.

Incognito took about 18 hours to complete -- in part, because I'm a chronic tweaker.

Hey, I'm betting you already knew that. :)

2008 goes out with a whisper, and I bid it a not-so-fond 'adieu'.

In the coming year, I hope to find myself a bit healthier, wealthier, and wiser. I don't, as of this minute, have a concrete plan for accomplishing these lofty goals, but it has to be done. The alternatives are too ridiculously dire for contemplation. And, yes, some days the emphasis is definitely on the 'ridiculous'!

I'm not a kid anymore -- far from it -- and feel fate and circumstance breathing down my neck at every turn. A finite amount of time left to accomplish an infinite number of impossible dreams.

As always, my resources and energy are running very thin, whereas my creativity and imagination are galloping along at a fever pitch. How to utilize one without the other? It's a classic conundrum; a twisted riddle of 'what' versus 'how', with a bit of 'when' tossed in for good measure.

What can I do with the next 12 months?

What will the next 12 months do with me?

It's a question for the ages and I'm feeling a definite 'now or never' vibe these days -- so, I'd better find a way.

Or, make one.

~ Winter Solstice Sunrise

On the night of the Northern Winter Solstice, I stayed up to watch the Sunrise 'live cam' coverage from the megalithic tomb of Newgrange, in County Meath, Ireland.

After a lifetime of reading about this incredible sight, I expected to be dazzled by a vision very like my image, above. Alas, an unfortunate run of drippy, cloudy, Irish weather thwarted my big 'cam' adventure. Cold fog and mist was the order of the day -- no brilliant sunrise for this virtual world traveler.

Typically determined to have my much anticipated Solstice Sunrise, I decided to create my own. As an added bonus, here's a sunrise I can experience whenever I please.

Take that, Mother Nature!

I set a goal, which I promptly screwed up -- then finished, anyway. Looks like my work here is done -- at least for today. Thanks to the viewers and readers who paced me along this crazy path.

Later today, I'm going to hang some new pieces at Timo's Coffeehouse, so I'll be up early, matting and framing. The day after that, I'm turning off the PC and taking a legitimate day off. Soon after that, I'll be back to tell you what I learned from this strange, strange trip.

The unexpected benefits of oxygen deprivation:

In May of 2006, I attended a high school graduation. I was there in support of a very special person -- though the actual ceremony was quite unremarkable.

Except for the fact that I was having a severe asthma attack that night. A 'should be in the hospital, face and fingertips numb from lack of oxygen, God, don't let me die 'til I get home' asthma attack.

To take my mind off my impending date with destiny, I started taking discrete photos of the architecture in the assembly hall. Photos of the big ceiling fixture (Original photo, above) eventually led to "Night, In This House".

Listened to music. Lots of music. Mostly: Chris Isaak, Rick Springfield, The Click Five and, oddly enough, The Zombies. Oh, and the soundtracks to the "28" movies (more on this, below).

Checked out the new TV season. I might refuse to speak to you if you're not watching:

The Mentalist (CBS) -- Psychic? Prestidigitator? Crack investigator? I do know that that Simon Baker is the cutest man on TV. By that, I mean 'every-mother's-son, ruffle his hair, just adorable' cute. Just gotta love a man with a tortured past who is blatantly cuddly, charming, funny, and always the smartest person in the room.
The weekly mysteries are decently twisty; the humor is suitably sly. Sublime!

Life on Mars (ABC) -- Struck unconscious in 2008, a police detective wakes up in 1973. Ah, the '70s, when real men wore wide collars and polyester shirts, and music came on giant vinyl discs. Those were the days!
The sci-fi/supernatural elements of this show make it irresistible. Impressive cast, too!

Crusoe (NBC) -- An unexpected adventure/period piece/buddy show. Think 'Starsky and Hutch on a deserted island' (only, with a less-grumpy Hutch). Simply enjoyable stuff with two very likable, and very different, guys leaning on each other for survival and friendship -- like buddy shows used to be.

The Eleventh Hour (CBS) -- Science-based mystery series. Lousy first episode, but has been very good, since. Ignore any bad reviews that were based on the first ep. The show has definitely moved up and on.
Mostly, I blank my mind and gaze, longingly, at the lovely, talented, and very mysterious Rufus Sewell. Later, of course, it's necessary to rewatch the episode to see what it was actually about. I offer no logical excuses for such hormone-driven behavior.

Watched lots of movies. Most notably (and frequently):
28 Days Later -- Biological apocalypse ravages the UK.
28 Weeks Later -- Sequel unfolds as biological apocalypse reinfects the UK.

Both movies are a hundred percent better than my tongue-in-cheek synopses, and are two of my favorites. (Definitely NOT for the faint of heart!) Perhaps the best soundtracks since the original 'Star Wars'. Hold on a sec, I'm gonna load them up, right now!

After a false start (the large, square centerpiece of my exhibit had to be shelved at the last minute), the " The Art Of Being a Woman" gallery show has come and gone. I didn't sell a single piece, but there's something immensely gratifying about having my work in a gallery for a month -- and the show looks great on my resume!

Also, it was a chance to give my "What is digital art?" mini-spiel to a lot of curious people. Knowledge is power, you know.

The first two pics, above, are from the March 8 premiere, where we were serenaded by Laura Marie, a very talented, local singer-songwriter.

As a special bonus, Laura Marie set up in the perfect space -- with my wall of work as her backdrop. I love it when a plan comes together. (insert world-dominating laughter here)

As you might (or, might not!) have guessed, the bottom two pics, above, are actually abstract manipulations of a photo of my work hanging on that lovely, red wall.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
(Space shuttle, rogue satellite, eclipse -- oh, my!)

I've been awake since 3:30 a.m. Why, you ask? To watch NASA's coverage of the shuttle landing, of course. Besides, who really needs more than 2-1/2 hours of sleep?

I've spent the last couple of weeks tuned into NASA TV as an enthusiastic, if earthbound, "mission crasher". The crew members of the Atlantis Orbiter and the International Space Station may not have noticed me, but I was peeking over their gravity-free shoulders at every possible opportunity. (Honestly, if the Internet had been available during my childhood, my inquisitive brain would have exploded from too much input!)

This morning, at about 8:08 a.m., the shuttle made a picture-perfect landing at the Kennedy Space Center. So, I wave a fond goodbye to this particular sci-not-fi interlude, but the Endeavor launches very soon. And, I still have tonight's lunar eclipse to look forward to!

At least I thought I did. For some reason, though we haven't had significant rain here since last summer, the clouds have rolled over San Antonio. Barring a meteorological miracle, I'll be deprived of the last full lunar eclipse until the year 2010. ~ Sigh.~ Guess I'll have to get some sleep, instead. What a concept!

There's still a chance the government will let me tag along as they try to shoot down the disaster movie-inspired Spy Satellite of Potential Doom. I'm sure there's some way I could contribute to that not-so-Top-Secret mission!

Or, maybe not . . .

I've been invited to take part in a month-long gallery exhibit in celebration of Women's History Month. (I'll post details, later -- about the show, not about Women's History Month.)

I'm not quite in "panic mode" yet, but I am busy, busy. So, I'm off to cry for a speedy replacement of the gorgeous, but unfortunately scratched, print I received this morning.

We Creatures Of Dreams . . .

Recently, I've been dreaming of water, and barely a night goes by without at least one watery dream.

A few nights ago, I completed "Breathing Underwater" -- a digital, stylized view of my dreamy waterworld. Sans fish. I really don't care for fish.

Well, except for whale sharks -- which would take up way too much of the picture.

And, maybe, those brilliantly-colored, salt water babies that I see in some aquariums. You know, the ones that look like fish jewelry.

On third thought, I'm also strangely fond of the freaky, deep water, eerily-translucent thingies from the PBS documentaries . . .

The Continuing "Timo's" Exhibit Saga

Since September, 2006, I've been lucky enough to keep a rotating art exhibit at Timo's Coffeehouse -- one of San Antonio's top rated establishments.

In a perfect world, I'd hang out there, daily, to gorge on their delectable variety of teas (I'm not a coffee drinker) and to unapologetically stuff myself with the incredible offerings of photo-perfect pastries, salads, and entrees. (I could barely keep my eyes off yesterday's display of rich, fudgy-looking brownies!) Of course, I refrain, as my slipping into a diabetic coma would likely stress the staff and generally disrupt business.

Instead, yesterday, I spent a few very pleasant hours at Timo's removing some pieces, which had been hanging for several months, and installing these 9 framed pieces:

I always have a blast there -- meeting and chatting with interesting, real world people, listening to good music, and having a chance to talk about my work to an enthusiastically supportive audience -- all very different from my usual solitary days at the computer.

About ACEOs

What, you ask, is an ACEO?

An ACEO (which stands for Art Cards, Editions, and Originals) is a collectible bit of art which is bound by only one rule:

An ACEO must measure 3.5"x2.5" -- or vice versa.

Beyond that single requirement, an ACEO can take any form: an original painting or drawing, a limited edition print/reproduction, a photograph, or anything else the artist can imagine. I've seen them made of paper, glass, metal, fabric, and other materials.

With ACEOs, only the size matters!

~ Four Unexpected Digis

As a digital artist, I often see the "usual" in a most unusual way. When I least expect it, a mundane item catches my eye and screams, "Here I am! Manipulate me!!!"

That's exactly what happened a few days ago when I saw the "original" pic, above. My fellow Etsian, Amanda, posted a link to her handy tutorial on how to recycle empty TicTac containers. I don't eat TicTacs, but, inexplicably, my Spidey Sense was in full tingle and I was compelled to take a peek.

The moment I saw the clean lines and muted colors of Amanda's photo, several fully-formed images popped into my mind. (Yep, that really is how my mind works . . .) The finished images, above, are pretty darn close to my initial ... ahem ... visions.

I love it when a plan comes together!

My sincere thanks to Amanda (Etsy I.D. "Polyclarific"), for allowing me to play with her unexpectedly mind-bending photo (which, we agree, looks like a row of washing machines with their lids up).

Welcome, Sherry! I'm glad you enjoy the work. Seven images from the "Please, Take a Seat" series are currently being exhibited at Timo's Coffee House, where the original photos were taken.

I use Photoshop about 95% of the time, though my hard drive is chock-a-block with imaging software of every persuasion. You never know when you'll need that one, obscure function that Photoshop doesn't offer.

You're right, you'll never learn all of Photoshop. I began with Photoshop Elements (which is a little easier to manage) and moved to Photoshop about seven years ago. I discover new features all the time! Picking up a copy of "Photoshop for Dummies" and working through it a chapter at a time was a HUGE help. Also, be sure to Google for the countless, free, Photoshop tutorials that are available online.

Remember -- never alter your original image, try everything, save frequently. And, don't forget to have fun!

Hi, Cynthia! You'll love "Testament", but don't forget the tissues! Let me know when/if you watch it. I honestly can't remember ever having a good night's sleep -- though, if I'm really exhausted, I can get four or so hours without waking. Most night's, it's more like three or four hours with lots of interruptions. It's more of a drag as I develop more health problems, but most of the art is born during those long, solitary nights. Payoff!

This fractal-based piece is a variation of Rem Sleep, which was posted here last year. I love the original piece, and, exercising the true spirit of digital art, return to it often when inspiration strikes.

Have I mentioned that I regularly experience many of the symptoms of REM Sleep Behavior Disorder? No? Well, that's a story for another day.

Emotions in Motion

I'm a very emotional creature. More often than is good for me, I'll go out of my way to wring every last drop of highs and lows out of any given situation. Questioning everything. Wanting to know everything and feel everything. Which is why, instead of sleeping last night, I decided to watch the most emotional movie ever filmed.

That would be "Testament", the realistic, heart- (and gut-) wrenching tale of one family's struggle to survive the first few months after a nuclear disaster. Without the use of special effects or political hyperbole, this quiet film dogs the footsteps of a suburban mother (Jane Alexander, in an Oscar-nominated role) as she witnesses the inevitable decimation of her family and the surrounding community.

To say too much would spoil the film for those who haven't seen it, but it's beautiful, impossibly sad stuff, and I cried myself right into a headache. Testament is one of my all-time favorite films. Rent or buy it to view -- don't watch it on network TV, massacred by commercials and PSAs.

So, at 3 a.m., with my face all red and splotchy, my nose running, and my head pounding, I realized that my spirits needed lifting -- immediately.

Pop quiz:

What does a girl watch when she needs to snicker and chuckle and laugh out loud?

When she's desperate for improbably attractive male eye candy that will immediately turn her thoughts away from creeping nuclear fallout?

When she's got an urge to rid the world of the criminal element, but is too lazy to grab her gun and hit the urban streets?

Well, if the girl is this girl, she makes a cup of Red Zinger tea and curls up with her treasured episodes of "Keen Eddie".

Of course she does!

Keen Eddie stars the delectable Mark Valley (currently seen on Boston Legal). It's the very tall tale of an NYPD detective who, after a drug bust gone ridiculously wrong, follows his leads across the pond. There, he settles in (yeah, like a fish out of water settles in) with a stuffy squad at Scotland Yard.

Keen Eddie is one of the smartest cop shows ever filmed. It's full of rollicking fun mixed with moments of intensity, second only to the incomparable Due South. (Admittedly, that "second" is sometimes only because Due South has Paul Gross. And, Paul Gross is . . . well, PAUL GROSS.)

Keen Eddie looks like a feature film and feels like a fast paced rock video; it's brimming with quick camera cuts, amazing visuals, and a wicked, contemporary soundtrack. The dialogue is rapid, slyly witty, and sharp enough to give you paper cuts. The gallery of characters, and their performers, are what TV would always be about -- if this world were a perfect world. There's even a touch of romance, a cuddly cat, and an evil little dog with way too much attitude to ever be called a pet.

Y'see? Something for everybody! What on earth were The Powers That Be over at FOX thinking when they let this one go? What's the plural of "dufus"? Dufuses? Dufusii?

Well, at least I'll have enjoyed every one of the 13 Keen Eddie episodes, more than once, before I'm engulfed in nuclear winter.

So, that's what I did last night.

When did I sleep? Ooops, I knew I was forgetting something . . .

Despite the fact that I can barely find the time to maintain one blog, I'm actually thinking of starting a second, which will operate strictly as a "selling" gallery.

I'm attributing this insane idea to general sleep deprivation and a long-term lack of dark chocolate. Wouldn't it be great if Hershey's and Godiva chocolates grew on trees in my back yard? Of course, I'd have to invest in better sunblock, 'cuz I'd be spending a lot more time outdoors!

Sweet, Sweet Hearts!

Ah, the undeniably commercial allure of Valentine's Day! The red roses, the dark chocolate, the pink champagne!

Okay, so I don't really get Valentine's Day, at all. But, I do get hearts. I love the shape -- round, open, seductive and friendly, with just a couple of sharp points to get your attention. Hearts are pretty, and fun! Can you say the same about rectangles?

I think not!

Of course, not all of my "heart" experiences have been good ones. I remember, all too well, the crushing disappointment I felt upon realizing the thing in my chest was not rounded and pretty like a Valentine's heart.

There I was, all of about 6-years-old, dragging the "H" encyclopedia into my grandmother's room and asking if this illustrated thing was really inside the human body.
Yuck! This was a much greater blow than finding out there's no Santa Claus! (Yes, I really did read encyclopedias -- and dictionaries -- when I was six. The Nerd Effect came early, and easily, to me.)

Now, I make my own pretty (sometimes, pretty unusual) hearts. Valentines Day or not, they'll be available in my shop.

Good morning, class! Today, we're going to learn about ACEOs.
